Is Your Team Losing 1 in 6 Offers? Here's How to Fix That

I read a Glassdoor report that said over 1 in 6 job offers—about 17.3% - are declined. In other words, nearly 1 in 6 offers are getting turned down. That’s a real “yikes” for hiring teams!

What’s Really Going On?

  • Offer Decline in U.S.: In the U.S., the current estimated job-offer rejection rate is around 17.3%.

  • By Industry: In professional and technical sectors, decline rates are even higher - around 19.4%, likely driven by high demand and multiple competing offers.

  • Positive Trends Emerging: Offer-acceptance rates are improving, with 84% of candidates now accepting offers—up from about 81% in 2021.

Why Are Offers Being Declined?

1. Poor Candidate Experience

  • 26% of candidates declined offers in 2024 due to poor experiences - such as poor communication or unclear expectations.

  • Candidates are 38% more likely to accept jobs after a positive interview experience.

  • 82% of companies do virtual interviews, but 70% of candidates still prefer them in person.

2. Interview Perception Matters

  • Candidates are 2.6 percentage points more likely to accept if the interview was one “level” more difficult on a 1–5 scale.

  • Only about 10.5% of interviews are rated “difficult,” so there’s room to increase challenge strategically.

  • Skills tests boost acceptance by 1.4–2.5 percentage points, while IQ or personality tests can actually reduce acceptance by 1–2.3 points.

3. Market Dynamics

  • In tight markets - especially in tech - candidates often have multiple offers, leading to higher decline rates.

What You Can Do: Offer-Decline Prevention Strategies

1. Be Transparent About Pay Early
Advertise salary ranges or at least a band - so candidates aren’t surprised later.

2. Sell the Role, Not Just the Pay
Remind them why this is a great opportunity - not just a job. Show them what’s exciting and where the role could take them.

3. Go Formal with Offer Delivery
Use polished formats—like a Word doc turned PDF - not just a casual email. It sets a tone of professionalism and respect.

4. Level-Up Your Interview Process Strategically

  • Add structured steps: a questionnaire, phone screen, video prompt, or skills exercise.

  • Increase the challenge slightly so the role feels more prestigious.

  • Use skills tests rather than IQ/personality tests.

  • Keep communication clear, respectful, and on time - this can improve acceptance likelihood by up to 38%.

Quick Stats at a Glance

  • Offer decline rate (U.S.): ~17.3% (~1 in 6)
