Communicating Transparently & Compassionately in Terminations.

In the challenging (and oftentimes emotional) circumstances of workforce reductions, effective communication anchored in transparency and compassion is essential. As a leader, your responsibility is to honestly convey the reasons behind these difficult decisions while showing genuine care for impacted employees. In today’s digital age, the stakes are even higher, as your approach could easily become the subject of a viral TikTok video. If you haven't seen #fired or #igotfired...you're missing out.

At Salt & Light Advisors, we understand the gravity of these conversations. Here’s our guidance to help you navigate these delicate situations:

1. Be Clear and Direct

Communicate the financial pressures, market shifts, or strategic changes driving the decision with utmost clarity. Avoiding ambiguity is crucial as it only breeds mistrust among your employees. They deserve to know the truth about the situation. If you need some learning in this area, I recommend taking the coursework I personally created to assist HR staff, managers and leaders in this area.

2. Listen with Empathy

Create a supportive environment where employees feel heard. Allow them space to process the news and express their concerns. Acknowledge their feelings and perspectives genuinely. Listening with empathy demonstrates that you value them as individuals, not just employees. The discomfort for you as a leader or HR staff person will be over soon enough - the discomfort for the impacted employee will be lingering for days (or even months). Take the time. Be a human.

3. Outline Available Support and Resources

Reassure your employees by outlining the support and resources available to them. Whether it’s severance packages, job placement services, or counseling, make it clear that the company is committed to assisting with their transition. This shows your dedication to their well-being even beyond their tenure with the company.
